Dennis W. Archer, Immediate Past President of the American Bar Association, will be the 2005 Hooding Ceremony Speaker, at 1:45 pm on Sunday, May 15th. The University Commencement will be held on Monday, May 16th at 9:00 am with Arnold Palmer (’51, LL.D. ’70) as the Graduation Speaker.
Dennis Archer, former Detroit Mayor and Michigan Supreme Court Justice, is the first person of color to serve as the President of the American Bar Association. After two four-year terms as Mayor of Detroit, Archer took his current position as Chairman of Dickinson Wright PLLC, a 200-person Detroit-based law firm.
Archer has won numerous awards, including Public Official of the Year by Governing magazine. He has been named one of the 25 most dynamic mayors in America by Newsweek, one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans by Ebony magazine, and one of the 100 Most Powerful Attorneys in the United States by the National Law Journal.
Dennis Archer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Western Michigan University, and taught learning disabled children at two Detroit public schools from 1965-70, while he earned his law degree from Detroit College of Law.
