Robert K. Walsh, Dean of the School of Law since 1989, was honored at Forsyth Country Club on Friday evening, April 27, by 240 of the law school’s dearest and most generous friends. The festive tribute for Dean Walsh included music, humor and heartwarming testimonials of Dean Walsh’s accomplishments over the past 18 years.
Eugene Pridgen (MBA ’75, JD’78), Chair of the Law Board of Visitors, was the master of ceremonies. The evening began with a musical arrangement from the 1930′s sung by Laura Ingram Semilian. Tributes were given by Melanie Nutt, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, with a staff perspective; Suzanne Reynolds, Professor of Law, with a faculty perspective; and The Honorable Denise Hartsfield with an alumni perspective. President Nathan Hatch presented Dean Walsh with a silver chalice and added his words of thanks and praise from the University. An entertaining video presentation highlighted Dean Walsh’s achievements through interviews with many individuals who have played key roles during his decanal tenure.
Associate Dean Ann Gibbs surprised Dean and Kathie Walsh with a parting gift from the law school – a "tennis getaway" at the Greenbrier. Kay Donahue honored Kathie Walsh for being the woman supporting our Dean for all these years. And the last surprise speaker was Woody Teague who said he had met all of the deans of the School of Law during his lifetime and humorously attributed Dean Walsh’s success to following his advice.
While this gala was a memorable evening honoring both Bob and Kathie Walsh, the newly created Bob and Kathie Walsh Endowed Scholarship creates an enduring tribute which will assist generations of future Wake Forest students – a fitting tribute for a Dean who has made fundraising for scholarships his number one priority.
