Professor of Law Suzanne Reynolds (JD ’77) gave the keynote address at the University’s Opening Convocation at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Wait Chapel.
The convocation honored Wake Forest’s 175th anniversary and celebrated public engagement across the university.
The title of Reynolds talk was “Inquiring Minds and Open Hearts: Wake Forest and Public Engagement.”
“In the past several decades, commentators have warned us that Americans feel less connected to each other and to our communities,” Reynolds said. “This phenomenon alone justifies focusing attention on public engagement. In a university, however, there are many additional reasons for the focus, like the impact on the intellectual lives of faculty and students. We have to remind each other, though, that before we can effectively engage the public, we first have to engage our hearts.”
