When Nidia Mercedes (LLM ‘15) talks about her career path beginning in the Dominican Republic, her passion for law and Wake Forest University shines.

Mercedes is a supervising paralegal in the Immigration Law Division of Brock & Scott PLLC in Winston-Salem. Now having her L.LM. degree, her future plans include sitting for the New York bar and working as an immigration lawyer.

“My experience with the LL.M. program at Wake Forest Law was exceptional. I achieved my professional goals in a wonderful environment where you feel like part of a big family, receive a warm welcome and where you can achieve your goals with the highest standard of educational quality.”

After graduating in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in law from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña, Mercedes represented clients in various courts throughout the Dominican Republic, served as general counsel for a large construction company, a bank debt collection company and had her own law firm. Her goal of working in immigration law in the U.S. motivated her to explore more opportunities in legal education.

When she arrived in the United States in 2011, she first worked as an immigration legal assistant, then completed the Paralegal College Certificate course at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with an eye toward pursuing an LL.M. degree.

“I chose Wake Forest Law for my LL.M. degree because of its reputation worldwide,” she said. “I was drawn especially to the professors who have been recognized for their high quality. Personalized tutoring in an environment of professionalism and respect helped prepare me to be competitive in the U.S. legal market.”
