The School of Law will initiate an S.J.D. (Scientiae Juridicae Doctor) degree program beginning in the fall semester of 2008. The S.J.D. degree is designed for international legal scholars and law academics interested in undertaking advanced legal studies in the United States with an eye to pursuing (or continuing) academic careers in their home countries.

Professor Sid Shapiro testified on Wednesday, April 2, before a subcommittee of the Committee on Oversight of the United States House of Representatives. The committee hearing was on a proposed legislation to amend the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), which controls the use of federal advisory committees by administrative agencies. Professor Shapiro testified that because of adverse court rulings, agencies can take advantage of several loopholes to avoid FACA. Shapiro urged Congress to close these loopholes in order to establish greater transparency and accountability in the advisory committee process. He also testified in favor of web-based publication by agencies of information about advisory committees and improvements in the screening process to prevent the participation on committee by persons with financial or other conflicts of interest. Representatives from the General Accounting Office, the General Services Administration, and the Department of Defense testified with Professor Shapiro. The subcommittee is chaired by Representative Wm. Lacy Clay, who presided at the hearing.

In late January, Professor Robert Chesney participated in a panel discussion of the state secrets privilege, sponsored by the Constitution Project at the National Press Club in Washington. Shortly thereafter, Senators Specter and Kennedy introduced a reform bill. In the shadows of Roger Clemens testimony before the House committee, on the same day Chesney was asked to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding his views of the pros and cons of the legislation. Chesney is now in the process of responding to follow up questions from committee staff, as well as converting his written testimony into a law review article.

Thomas Tighe, a national leader in humanitarian relief efforts, will visit the Law School on Friday, October 5 as our guest in the Conversation With series. The "Conversation With" programs are designed to bring role model legal professionals to the law school to speak informally with students in an interview-style format about their careers in the law. The program will begin at noon in the large courtroom.
