Estate Gift Creates Endowed Law Scholarship

Thanks to the generous bequest from the estate of Robert B. “Bob” Broughton (JD ’51), the Wake Forest School of Law will be able to establish an endowed scholarship in his name. Mr. Broughton, who credited his Wake Forest law professors with inspiring him to pursue a legal career, died in Raleigh in 2007. In addition to this estate gift, Mr. Broughton had previously created two charitable gift annuities to benefit the Wake Forest law school in the future. These gifts will allow the law school to provide needed financial aid to many deserving law students.

Professor Carol Anderson Chairs NC Bar Foundation CLE Program Subcommittee

Professor Carol B. Anderson, Director of Wake Forest University School of Law’s Trial Practice and Litigation Clinic Programs, will serve as 2008 – 2009 Chair of the North Carolina Bar Foundation’s CLE Program Subcommittee.   Professor Anderson has been a member of the NCBF’s oversight CLE Committee since 2007, and will continue in that capacity.

Professor Sid Shapiro Is Featured Speaker at the Fourth National Integrity in Science Conference

Professor Sid Shapiro recently spoke at the Fourth National Integrity in Science Conference in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.  Shapiro spoke on “The Federal Advisory Committee Act and Integrity in Science.”  The topic of his panel was “Reducing Conflicts of Interest on Federal Advisory Committees.”  Other speakers were from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Health, and the National Research Center for Women and Families.

Law School Faculty Engage in a Whirlwind of Professional Activities During Spring and Summer

Carol Anderson has been appointed as incoming chair of the programs committee of the NC Bar Foundation’s CLE Committee. The Bar Foundation is the CLE component of the NC Bar Association and is the largest provider of continuing legal education in the state. Professor Anderson will also be teaching a three-day basic trial skills seminar for the young associates from the various offices of Womble Carlyle in mid-June and will teach the Judicial Extern Program for two sessions of summer school. She has been invited to lecture on Direct and Cross Examination at the annual Building Trial Skills: National Session sponsored by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) in Colorado.

Law School Salutes Class of 2008

The School of Law Hooding Ceremony took place in Wait Chapel on Sunday May 18, with former Senator James Talent delivering the keynote address. Talent, a respected politician at both the state and national levels, addressed 141 candidates for the Juris Doctor degree and 23 candidates for the Master of Laws in American Law degree.
